Privilege isn’t just being lucky. Instead, it’s the advantages that individuals have because they belong to a particular social group, which they have over individuals who belong to other groups. Access to wellness, education or financial stability can be considered as examples of privileges, but whether we understand them as privileges will depend on whether we have these advantages because we belong to a particular social group. Understanding privilege is really important for and a big challenge to social justice movements such as feminism. For example, it’s important for white, middle-class feminists to recognise that they are privileged in comparison to a lot of other women because of their class and race. Given this, recognising our privileges, questioning and fighting against them is important for us as feminists.
