The Manifesto

We are a digital collective of intersectional feminists. Our main aim is to make feminist theory easier to access and understand.

Why theory matters

We believe that feminist theory is hugely important to the modern feminist movement. It helps us make sense of the world we’re living in, both in terms of our own experiences and those of others.

Theory provides structured thought to our movement. It allows us to learn from those who came before us in fighting the structural oppression. Theory lets us see the struggles we face but often shrug off aren’t these random things that happen only to us, but that they are the result of wider structures.

As intersectional feminists, theory can show us how the struggles of a cis white women are linked to those of a non-binary persona of colour. How the struggles of a disabled trans woman are linked with a teenage refugee living in the Global South. We believe in the liberation of all people.

How we grab back

Reading, discussing, and writing about theory.

By engaging in theory, we can see the oppressive structures that surround us more clearly. In doing so, we gain a better understanding of our own experiences, unpacking and fighting our own biases, and become more effective at organising campaigns.

Claiming space.

By promoting feminist voices, we claim and create space for those for whom it has so often been denied. Importantly, this space is inclusive: none of what we publish requires higher education or background knowledge to engage with it, and there is no level of education or experience required to write for us.

Figuring shit out.

By continually engaging with theory, we equip ourselves with knowledge on how to do all this well. For those in positions of privilege, reading theory allows us to become better allies. For example, in reading theory by trans people, cis allies can more effectively confront transphobia; in reading race theory, white allies can confront their inbuilt racist beliefs and deconstruct them. Dismantling oppressive systems begins with recognising the role we play in them and the ways in which we have infringed on the rights of others.

Being loud.

Publication is crucial to what we do. We are committed to promoting a range of voices, and to creating materials which are easy to engage with. Doing so allows people from all backgrounds to engage with theory which helps us understand our own lives, and to feel greater empathy for the lives of others by promoting understanding.
